History

2026

Emerging from Agency

  • Bella Center Copenhagen
  • 10,000+

TechBBQ 2026 filled Bella Center Copenhagen under the theme "Emerging from Agency". Over two days more than 10,000 founders, investors, operators and researchers gathered around one idea: technology is no longer what it could be, it is what it is becoming. The people building it now are the ones setting its direction.

2025

Build to Matter

  • Bella Center Copenhagen
  • 10,000+

TechBBQ brought together more than 10,000 attendees under the theme "Build to Matter". The event explored what it truly means to build with purpose and to create lasting impact in a world defined by urgency, abundance, and constant change. Founders, investors, researchers, and policymakers asked the essential questions: Why does this matter? Who does it serve? What impact will it have? At its core, TechBBQ 2025 stood as a reminder that building is never just about products or companies. It is about building trust, relationships, and ecosystems that matter.

2024

One Giant Leap

  • Lokomotivværkstedet
  • 8,000+

"One Giant Leap" embodies the feeling of being a founder, a constant giant leap of faith in something you believe in. It embodies the spirit of unity, the transformative impact of converging efforts and symbolises our innovative efforts. In a time of urgency, where our needs as people and planet are ever-evolving, we stand on the shoulders of giants, where every small idea and action can propel us forward towards a thriving and brighter future.

2023

Entangled

  • Lokomotivværkstedet
  • 7,500+

We are in a state of hyper-connectivity and entanglement, with new technologies and conversations unfolding across the world. Through the use of technology, sharing of ideas and leaning into the unknown, we can build together, not apart. So, let's ask the questions: who are we impacting, why are we making the choices that we are, and how can we think outside of the box?

2022

Discovery

  • Lokomotivværkstedet
  • 6,400+

Discovery was the year TechBBQ moved to Lokomotivværkstedet, a historic steam engine workshop, with a new team, a new venue and new goals. The ambition was growth without losing the quality of the connections, so the summit closed at 6,400 registered ticket holders rather than chasing a bigger number.

2021

Elevate

  • Øksnehallen
  • 5,000+

Our ninth event, and the first back in a room together after the worst of the pandemic. 5,000 registered visitors came to Øksnehallen from around the world. After eighteen months of quarantines and video calls, the community was as glad to be there as we were.

2020

Resilience

  • Online, from Matrikel 1
  • 2,600+

In 2020 TechBBQ went fully digital because of COVID-19. Instead of a venue, the audience tuned in to four virtual stages from home. Pivoting a large event that fast was hard, and it taught us how to blend physical and digital formats for good.

2019

  • Øksnehallen
  • 8,000+

Our largest summit to that point, and sold out. 8,000 registered ticket holders came to Øksnehallen: journalists, investors, community builders, partners, universities, politicians, royalty, and above all the scaleups and early-stage startups TechBBQ was built for.

2018

  • Øksnehallen
  • 6,000+

TechBBQ surprised itself in 2018, growing in both audience and scope. With room to grow further, the team capped ticket numbers to protect the intimate, founder-friendly atmosphere. The doors also opened wider, to community builders, students, tech talents, corporates and international media.

2017

  • Øksnehallen
  • 4,000+

The first two-day TechBBQ. What began as a 300-person tech event had become a large international summit, with attendees flying in from across Europe and the United States. The venue moved to a bigger, rawer space in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District.

2016

  • Copenhagen Opera House
  • 2,500+

The Danish startup scene gathered at the Opera House one last time. The one-day program was packed with speakers, panels and the world premiere of the Danish Spiri electric car, and it sold out at around 2,500 registered participants. Tickets ran out early enough that we had to turn investors away.

2015

  • Copenhagen Opera House
  • 1,000+

Moving to the Opera House, TechBBQ passed 1,000 registered ticket holders for the first time. It was also the first time the summit drew stakeholders from around the world. David Helgason, co-founder of Unity Technologies, told the room how close the company came to bankruptcy before it became the most used game development software in the world.

2014

  • Copenhagen Business School
  • 600+

"Double up and extra spicy" was the tagline, and the second TechBBQ doubled in size, program and impact. The venue moved from the Old Stock Exchange to Copenhagen Business School to hold twice the crowd. Mette Lykke, then CEO of Endomondo, spoke openly about the growth problems the company was facing.

2013

  • Børsen, the Old Stock Exchange
  • 300+

The first official TechBBQ, on 7 May 2013, with 300 ticket holders from the grassroots of the Copenhagen startup scene. It was held in Børsen, the 17th-century Old Stock Exchange beside the Danish Parliament. Morten Lund took the stage and said "fuck hygge" to make a point about Danish modesty. A ticket cost 300 kroner.
