For a century, finding a drug meant making thousands of molecules and testing them until one survived. That is being replaced by something stranger. Quantum computers promise computational capabilities beyond those of even the most powerful classical supercomputers, with potentially transformative applications ranging from the life sciences and drug discovery to artificial intelligence. And there is solid scientific ground for this promise: once large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers become available, they will be able to solve important problems efficiently that are believed to be intractable classically.
