Quantum computers simulating chemistry. AI agents running experiments. Sensors reading biology at scales no classical instrument reaches. The gap between someday and shipping is closing fast, and the people closing it came to Copenhagen. For this edition the room widened beyond quantum, to life sciences, AI and the hard sciences. On TechBBQ Day 1 the Deep Tech Stage told one story, how medicine goes from calculation to clinic, told by the founders, scientists and investors building it. Before the stage began we gathered the people who would be on it: an invite-only breakfast for the builders moving hard science from theory to consequence. One table, no small talk, straight to what matters.

Medicine is being rebuilt at every layer at once, and those layers are rarely shown together. Molecules once found by trial and error are now designed and computed. Labs that ran on human hands are starting to run themselves. Sensors now reach inside single cells. And in Copenhagen, machines are going up that may one day simulate biology outright. Michael Baczyk opens the day by joining those layers into one picture, from the clinic through design, execution and measurement to compute, then takes the first conversation straight onto the stage. Every cell in the body is constantly being told what to become, and that instruction set has never been readable at scale. Micha Breakstone is a serial AI entrepreneur whose previous company, Chorus.ai, was acquired for $575 million. He leads Cellular Intelligence, a clinical-stage AI company building a universal foundation model for cell signaling, the way cells communicate. Decoding that language is the first step toward predicting and controlling it, offering the potential to advance biology from something we observe to something we design. Expect vision for what the models can do today, what they can't do, and what's set to change for medicine once cells become truly programmable. For a century, finding a drug meant making thousands of molecules and testing them until one survived. That is being replaced by something stranger. Software proposes the molecule, predicts how it will behave inside a body, and increasingly simulates the trial before a single patient is enrolled. This panel brings together the people building those systems, from co-pilots that let three chemists design like thirty, to engines that model biology from a single protein up to a whole population. The open question is where it still breaks, and how much a pharmaceutical company can responsibly bet on a prediction. Predicting a molecule is one thing. Making it is another, and that is where most of the promise still dies. This session is about the execution layer: laboratories that behave like software, machines that build matter atom by atom, and agents that design an experiment, run it, read the result and decide what to try next. The panel spans retrosynthesis, robotic biolabs, materials foundries and atomic-layer manufacturing, and it holds a real disagreement about whether a model can be trusted alone or physics has to stay in the driving seat. The plainest question is the best one: how much of the loop runs without a human, and what happens where it stops? AI already reads scans faster than the clinicians reviewing them. The open question is when you let it decide. Robert Lauritzen built the first AI embedded directly inside MRI scanners at manufacturer level, running while the patient is still in the machine. Ask ten people where quantum is today and you'll get ten answers, mostly shaped by individual experiences. This panel tackles the question head-on. Across computing, sensing and the components underneath both: what has moved in the last twelve months, what is shipping to paying customers, and what is still a decade out? The panellists see the field from very different heights: a founder living with the hardware's limits, an investor who has to price the entire sector, and an institute that meets these companies before anyone else will fund them. The quantum story with nothing to do with computing, and the one already closest to a patient. Both companies here use the same underlying trick, atomic flaws in diamond that behave as extremely sensitive sensors, and point it at very different problems. One measures oxidative stress inside a single living cell, an MRI small enough to fit inside the cell itself, already used in hospital research on sepsis and cancer. The other reads blood and spinal fluid for the rare tumour cells that reveal whether a cancer treatment is working, aiming to answer in days what currently takes months. Deep tech is uniquely hard to market. The technology is complex and often beyond the expertise of the buyer, and the milestones that matter are invisible to anyone outside the field. Everyone on this panel has tackled this creative challenge: a designer who has rebuilt the identity of deep tech companies from scratch, a quantum marketing lead who led the comms for the largest deep tech round in the country's history, and communications leads at two specialist funds whose reputation rests on other people's wins. Practical and specific, for any deep tech team or founder building a category-defining company. Quantum computers promise computational capabilities beyond those of even the most powerful classical supercomputers, with potentially transformative applications ranging from the life sciences and drug discovery to artificial intelligence. And there is solid scientific ground for this promise: once large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers become available, they will be able to solve important problems efficiently that are believed to be intractable classically. Trapped ions, neutral atoms, superconducting circuits and the algorithms that will run on all of them, represented by people whose companies have made genuinely different bets, including the one building the machine going up in Copenhagen right now.
